Memories with Mortimer Pt. 2 of 2~stuffed stories

Hello my mystery loving friends, this is Mortimer the librarian sloth and I am here with part two of how I became royal librarian.

If you need a quick refresher, please feel free to go look back up a part one here!

And now.. the mysterious writing on the note…

It is actually quite interesting what happened next.

” Don’t look back, my love. My heart lies in the sea of gold. Someday, you will find me there.”

After finding the note, I put it in a plastic sandwich bag ( I know, very high tech 😉 ) and took it to my good friend Uncle Frederick ( we almost all call him Uncle Fred or Fredrick) the penguin who has a P.h.D in History and who used to be a professor at the university. He also loves to do any winter sport, his favorite being bob sledding, which it’s his dream to be a professional bob sledder one day. That’s just a random sidenote on my dear friend, my readers. 😉

“Why, hello there, my good sir”, said Frederick as I knocked on his door.

“Hello Uncle Fred! Well, I found something that you may want to see. “, I said as I handed him the plastic bag.

He took out his glasses and looked at the note.

“Hmm, my dear Mortimer, this is a very interesting find. Where were you able to get such a specimen?”, he said.

“In my airvent in my aparment”

“Your what?!”

“My airvent”

“That is preposterous! How could you find such a thing in an air vent?!”, Uncle Fred said.

I explained everything to him and he invited me inside and he offered me coffee. I accepted even though I already had two cups that morning. 😉

Uncle Fredrick sat down on his antique couch and explained the note to me with a sigh;

“Mortimer- please just listen for quick second and I can explain the paper that you hold in your claws, my sloth friend. The paper is genuine. The paper is actually from the days before FunTown had this land and when the crystal mines were plentiful in their magic. The writing is not old at all. The writing was from my fiance, Rebecca.”

“Oh… I am so sorry. Rebecca passed away three years ago. Is that right?”, I said.

“Yes, my friend. It still hurts a lot when I think about it. You know Rebecca was the most spunky penguin in the world. She was incredible. A few months after we were engaged, she had a dig on the borders of FunTown. You know that she was a very successful archaeologist. She sent me that very note from a scrap of old paper from the dig that she found. She sent it to me in the mail and she always wrote notes a little bit cryptic. She has ever since I met her, but I always figured out what they had to say and they always had such beautiful meaning.”

“And, what does this mean?”, I said on the edge of my seat.

“It means.. that she loved me very much and the ‘don’t look back’ means to not keep worrying about what I may have done in the past, but to focus on our future together. I always tended to worry that I had messed something up early on our relationship. I was quite awkward then..” , he said with a laugh.

He continued, ” Our wedding day that was to come she always called it her ‘sea of gold’. She said that would be the greatest find for her in her career if she could find an actual sea of gold one on her expeditions. So, she named the special event that because it meant that much to her. The last part ‘someday you will find me there’, was her talking about someday, we will be at the altar and getting married. It was so beautiful. She never came back from the dig. She was looking at an ancient ruin of a house with an old crystal mind nearby. She went to deep in the mine and there was a collapse. They looked everywhere for her and they never found her. Although, they never found her body which always struck me a bit odd. They assumed that she had passed and I am almost positive that she has… it’s been so long..”

There were tears in my dear friends eyes. It broke my heart to see him like this and then he said,

“I kept that note always very near to me since she passed. I had it in a special frame, to keep the old paper protected from decay, in my closet. I keep it there so that I am the only one who will ever see it, it’s too much to bear to have it on display, if you understand. I clean the frame each week and as I took out the note, it feel into my airvent in the floor and flew away. It hurt my heart, because it was the last piece I had of her.”, he said chocking up.

If you did not know, me and Uncle Fredrick live in the same apartment complex. He is only a couple floors above me ( i am on the first floor).

“So, it must have gotten caught in my airvent fan, made the noise, and I went to you since I recognized how old the paper was. I knew that you had knowledge in history so that is why, it led me to you.”, I said.

“I am so glad it did. How can I every repay you? Oh wait, I know. I know that you have been looking for a good job since you got your masters. I know! I have some connections at the royal university’s library if you are interested. I can put a good word in for you.”, he said.

“Oh, that’s too much. You can’t, sir!”, I said.

“Well, I can. This is the last piece I had of Rebecca’s and my relationship, I can’t thank you enough.”, he said.

We talked for awhile longer and I went back upstairs and ate a late lunch.

This whole mystery was something I knew I would never forget.

In the comments, I would love to discuss how you enjoyed my story on how I got my position at the royal library and if this lined up with any theories that you may have had. Would you enjoy another Memories with Mortimer series? What stuffie would you like to hear from sometime soon? What is your favorite book to read? I am always looking for suggestions.

I am looking forward to chatting with you all.

Until next time my dear readers!

Memories with Mortimer Pt. 1~stuffed stories

Greetings and Salutations!

My name is Mortimer the sloth. I am a simple kind of sloth, in my late 30s, who loves a good cup of coffee, bow ties, and classic literature.

You may know me as the kind, but slow worker at the FunTown International School System’s Royals University Library.

Sidenote: The main University Library is shared by all of the students but the Royal Library is an area and books specific to the roles of kings, queens, and royalty work.

here is a photo of me!

Today’s post is called Memories with Mortimer for a kindly good reason.

I will share with you all the story about how I became a royal librarian.

Oh, it is not as boring as it may sound, although to others, I may seem a little dull, but I really do have interesting stories to tell.

Well, let’s get started then, shall well?

When I was in my mid-twenties, fresh out of graduating from the local university with my masters in library studies, I was curious for the search of a good job. My dream job at the time was to work in the palace’s library that was for the royal family and advisors.

I decided to start small at the FunTown local public library so I can have some good job experience in my porfolio.

As I was filling out the application in my small apartment in the city ( about 10 miles away from the palace) , sipping my coffee out of my favorite red mug, listening to my favorite classical music, and then here was a whistling sound in the air vent above my head that caused me to start.

I have been living in my apartment for about 3 years now and I have never heard that sound before.

It sounded like a snake’s scales being scrapped against metal plate! It was creaky, and creepy!

I looked at the vent above my head, stood on my chair (sssslloooowwwwllly….because i am a sloth), and lifted the vent, and stuck my head in there, because the vent was a pretty decent size.

I looked around in the vent and I saw a piece of paper whistling in a vent fan and I grabbed it with my long fingers and looked at the weird cursive on the page.

It said…” Don’t look back, my love. My heart lies in the sea of gold. Someday, you will find me there.”

I put my vent back and sat down in my rolling desk chair. It was so odd, and cryptic…

I looked at the writing and noticed that the style of writing was from the ancient days of the kingdom of  Tonzenia.

Tonzenia is a country filled with desert sands, rich spices, and beautiful colored clothes. The people there are beautiful and the whole place is filled with a mystical feel. The street markets and the old palace is a beautiful part of their history.

(i have a minor in history, hence why i know all of this 😉 )

I was curious as to if it was truly an old paper from that time..and if so, why has it not rotted away… it’s been at least 150 years since this writing was popular…

WAS THIS PAPER GENUINE?! WHAT IS THE SEA OF GOLD? WHO IS THIS LOVER?!!

You can find out what happens in tomorrow’s post..

” Don’t look back, my love. My heart lies in the sea of gold. Someday, you will find me there.”
